Top Pot, with 17 stores in and around Seattle and three more in and around Dallas, plans to bring their much-loved hand-roasted coffee and “hand-forged” doughnuts to Tacoma, Washington. There will be two Tacoma cafes, the first of which should soon be open at 2724 North Proctor Street. Then, in the spring of next year, another Top Pot will open in The Village at Chambers Bay. We’ll take a Glazed Old Fashioned and a Glazed Chocolate Old Fashioned, please!
It began 27 years ago when 150 free Thanksgiving meals were served by Norma’s Cafe of Dallas, and this year the number of free meals served yesterday may have exceeded 8,000. Norma’s is not a large place so if you weren’t able to eat in, a free dinner was there for you to take home. For the 27th consecutive year, Norma’s Cafe will be serving free Thanksgiving dinner, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, at their Oak Cliff location (1123 West Davis Street in Dallas). While they don’t say anything about who the meal is for (in fact, they explicitly state it’s for anyone who comes), we suspect it’s meant more for people in need than anyone else, so if that’s you and your family, we suggest you show up early and enjoy the holiday and Norma’s hospitality.
The first Dallas area branch of the Chicago deep dish pizza chain Gino’s East arrived earlier this year in Arlington. This Thursday, November 19th, will see the opening of the first Gino’s East in Dallas proper, at 10310 Lombardy Lane. This will be the seventh Texas Gino’s East. Other branches can be found near Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Like the other Texas Gino’s, we expect this one will be serving their unique BBQ Brisket Za filled with BBQ brisket, caramelized onions, and roasted peppers.
A best hot dog list apparently is released on a daily basis. Why? Because people love ’em – hot dogs AND best lists. We read them not only to see what they have to say about our favorites (the yellow-relish-topped deep-fried rippers from Rutt’s Hut of Clifton, NJ appears on today’s list in question) but to pick up on the new, unfamiliar joints (Luscher’s of Dallas, TX, from a fancy-pants chef). You’ll also find coneys, Sonoran dogs, half-smokes, and dogs topped with SpaghettiOs on the list. Have at it!
Residents of Dallas, Texas will see for themselves if all the fuss is warranted when Shake Shack opens their first branch in the city in 2016. They’ll be moving into The Crescent retail complex in the New Urbanist neighborhood known as Uptown. The Shack currently has a presence in Texas with two stores in Austin. No word yet on the location-specific concretes, which always feature cookies, candies, cakes, and other sweet treats made by local food artisans, for the Big D.
Cheap gas, 69 cent a bag ice, live longhorns, donkeys, zebras, and camels, karaoke nights that require off-duty cops to direct traffic — and if that’s not enough, some of the best, and cheapest, tacos to be had in the Lone Star State. Yes, Fuel City in Dallas is not your ordinary gas station. Word has traveled and made the concept a success, so that a second Fuel City opened in Lufkin, and a third will open later this year in Mesquite. Latest news is that a fourth Fuel City will open in Fort Worth next summer, with a fifth to follow near Joe Pool Lake. A cheap-gas-and-tacos dynasty in the making — God Bless America!

St. Elmo Steak House, an Indianapolis landmark since 1902, is famed for their jumbo shrimp cocktail with explosive cocktail sauce. We’ve had it and, yes, it’s everything they say it is. But nine pounds of it in eight minutes? That’s what Joey Chestnut did last year to set a world record and win the World Famous St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail Eating Championship. Round Rock Donuts, north of Austin, has been frying ’em up since 1926. They have as cultish a following around here as Krispy Kreme has in other parts of the country. One member of the cult, apparently, is Mary G. Ramos, who writes fondly of Round Rock donuts for The Dallas Morning News: “[T]hey . . . make wonderful, yeasty, glazed doughnuts that have a rich yellow color from the fresh eggs that are used in them, as they were used in the original recipe.” By the way, we’ve actually shared one of those Texas-sized donuts. So what is it with Texas’ infatuation with Chicago edibles? Not only is Al’s #1 Italian Beef coming to Dallas but Gino’s East, Windy City deep-dish pizza specialist, is opening their first branches outside of the Chicago region this year, in the Lone Star State. The four pizzerias will be located in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and the Houston suburbs. Like the Al’s restaurants, they will be franchises. There are many signature Chicago street foods but our favorite, hands down, is the Italian beef. Thinly shaved beef is plucked from a trough of garlicky jus and laid in a fresh Italian roll. Hot? That’s spicy giardiniera, a chopped vegetable condiment. Sweet? Sweet red peppers. Dipped? They immerse the entire sandwich in the juice! We’ll take a beef, hot, sweet, and dipped. Continue reading
