Seattle Classic 13 Coins Relocating

After 50 years, the one-of-a-kind, 24/7 Seattle classic, 13 Coins, will be moving from the South Lake Union area this fall. Their building will be torn down for new development. The new site, at South King and 2nd Avenue South, is in Pioneer Square. The transition will be immediate – the new location will open as soon as the old one closes. Whether it’s eggs Benedict and hash browns you crave, or a bucket of Manila clams and sautéed fresh scallops, 13 Coins will be ready to satisfy you without a break in service.

Seattle’s Rodeo Donut Attempts Regulation Crowdfunding

Brioche is a pretty delicious thing in itself. Use that butter-and-egg-rich brioche dough as the basis for handmade donuts, as Rodeo Donut has done in Seattle, and you may find you’ve raised the deliciousness bar so high that folks not only want to buy your products, they want to invest in your business. At least, that what the owners of Rodeo Donut are hoping as they are among the first small businesses to attempt to raise capital through the new federal Regulation Crowdfunding regulations. Celebrate the Start of Ice Cream Season in Seattle

Chipotle Peanut Brittle. Double-Hop Caramel. Vegan Horchata. Durian, made with the fruit, not flavoring. Coffee floats and ice cream macarons. Those are just a few of the dozens of flavors and frozen concoctions you’ll have the opportunity to sample and purchase at Seattle’s first annual Ice Cream Festival, to be held this Sunday, May 22nd, from noon until 5 p.m. Continue reading

Top Pot Bringing Doughnuts and Coffee to Tacoma

Top Pot, with 17 stores in and around Seattle and three more in and around Dallas, plans to bring their much-loved hand-roasted coffee and “hand-forged” doughnuts to Tacoma, Washington. There will be two Tacoma cafes, the first of which should soon be open at 2724 North Proctor Street. Then, in the spring of next year, another Top Pot will open in The Village at Chambers Bay. We’ll take a Glazed Old Fashioned and a Glazed Chocolate Old Fashioned, please!

Ballard SeafoodFest, Seattle WA, July 11th and 12th 2015

The fishing community of Ballard, a Seattle neighborhood that sits alongside Puget Sound, got together with the local Elks to hold a salmon barbeque dinner in 1971 to raise money for the Chamber of Commerce. That dinner has since grown into the two-day Ballard SeafoodFest, drawing over 60,000 people to what was once a center of Scandinavian-American salmon fishermen. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 11th and 12th. Continue reading

Kiki Does 13 Coins (Over and Over)

Kiki Maraschino (whom we know as Elise) traveled to Seattle and made four visits in three days to the Mad Menesque 13 Coins, where she took in the old-fashioned ambiance (“trippy Barbarella lighting” says Kiki!) and sampled everything from clam chowder and shrimp cocktail to salmon Benedict, stopping at steak and eggs, fried zucchini, and retro relish trays along the way. If you enjoy urban classics with a ’60s sensibility you should take a look at Kiki’s report.

Free Ice Cream Monday!

Seattle’s Cupcake Royale is introducing their new Chef Series ice cream flavors on Monday, and to help celebrate the event, they will be holding an Ice Cream Social & Free Scoop Day at all locations from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Four of their six locations are scoop shops – the other two will be offering free ice cream sandwiches. The new Chef Series flavors include Smokey Rocky Road with Salted Marcona Almond Bark, Smoked Maple Old Fashioned with Luxardo Cherries, and Honey Ricotta with Pistachio Brittle.

New Chef at Seattle’s Canlis

Canlis, in its own words, is “the swankest, dressiest restaurant in Seattle.” When we dined there we were won over by the luxurious cuisine and seduced by the stunning views and caring hospitality. They’ve been open for 64 years and are about to make only their fifth chef transition, as Brady Williams, formerly of Roberta’s in Brooklyn, New York will take over the kitchen at Canlis on April 13th. Read more about Canlis’ search for a new chef, how they came to hire Mr. Williams, and how they plan to balance tradition and relevance on the menu in this Seattle Met story.

Cupcake Royale of Seattle Hosting Donut Pop-Up

The restless and creative bakers at the Cupcake Royale located in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, Washington are opening a donut pop-up within Cupcake Royale. Every morning from 7 a.m. until the donuts are sold out Rodeo Donut will produce half a dozen flavors using their scratch-made brioche dough as the donut base. They intend this venture to be several large steps up from standard and even hoity-toity donut shops, sourcing ingredients for their glazes and toppings from area farms, just as Cupcake Royale does. Opening day is Saturday, March 28th. The address of the Ballard Cupcake Royale is 2052 NW Market Street.

Top 20 Food Cities in the U.S.A.

The list is presented by Travel + Leisure, and chosen by their readers, as the best “food snob” cities but it doesn’t appear that any sort of pretentiousness is part of the equation. These seem more to be the 20 cities for people whose primary travel activity is eating, and that includes us. The list begins at #20 with Seattle. Louisville, at #16, gets recognition for the Hot Brown sandwich invented at The Brown Hotel. #15 New Orleans (#15! Wow!) topped the survey for fine dining, like Brennan’s, and sandwiches, such as the great ones served at Parkway Bakery. NYC is #10 and Cleveland (!) is seventh. Best food city in the U.S.? Houston!

Top Pot Opening at Seattle’s Alki Beach

The newest Top Pot doughnut shop will open tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., Friday, March 13th, at Seattle’s Alki Beach. The address is 2758 Alki Avenue SW. The store will offer ice cream, sandwiches, and pastries in addition to doughnuts and coffee.
