Chicago’s Pizano’s Coming to Milwaukee

Pizano’s Pizza and Pasta will be opening their first restaurant outside of the Chicago area in late spring, in Milwaukee, at 1150 North Water Street. Pizano’s, which began in 1991, now has six restaurants. The mini-chain was founded by Rudy Malnati, Jr., son of Rudy Malnati Sr. of Pizzeria Uno fame (and who may or may not have invented deep-dish pizza), and half-brother to Lou Malnati. Everything, Available Everywhere

When Shake Shack comes to Chicago and Billy Goat goes to Washington, and the Big Apple gets a Garrett’s, and Marshall Field’s is now Macy’s… does it all become less special? Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Tribune takes the opportunity, with the arrival of Shake Shack in the Windy City, to look at the effect of all this regional homogenization. Continue reading

Publican Sausage On Shake Shack Chicago Menu

When Shake Shack enters a new market they always select some quality local ingredients for their menu. We noted previously how, in Chicago, they are offering concretes made with Chicago’s Bang Bang Pie and Glazed & Infused doughnuts, and they are also offering Vienna Beef hot dogs. There are two other local twists on the menu. Another concrete incorporates a chocolate bar made with Hawaiian black sea salt, burnt sugar caramel, and 70% cacao dark chocolate, from Chicago’s high-end chocolatier Vosges Haut-Chocolat. And there’s a Publican Pork Sausage, made by Chicago’s Publican Quality Meats, a high-quality butcher and lunch spot. The sausage is topped with Shack’s cheese sauce and crispy-fried, ale-marinated shallots. The Chicago Shack opened yesterday. Continue reading

The Cherry Hut’s Pies Available for the Holidays

The Cherry Hut has been known for things cherry in northern Michigan since 1922. The restaurant in Beulah has closed for the season but, as is the usual practice, they keep a storefront open in nearby Bensonia where folks can purchase jams, jellies, candies, dried cherries, and anything else that they can stick cherries into. They’ll also ship those products. Unfortunately, up until this year, they never offered their famous cherry pies for sale once the restaurant closed in October. This year, for the first time, the Bensonia store will offer The Cherry Hut’s cherry pies! Continue reading

It’s Fresh Cider Time in Northern Michigan

Cold, crisp, sweet, and spicy cider, freshly pressed from apples just off the tree – is there anything else that evokes fall quite so vividly? Apple growing regions all over America are currently picking and pressing. Apple farms are holding apple festivals and frying up cider donuts, the perfect accompaniment to a cold cup of cider. Cake Nouveau of Ann Arbor Will Be Closing

Master baker Courtney Clark will be hanging up her rolling pin, at least professionally, within a few months. She’s decided to close her eight-year-old shop in Ann Arbor, MI, called Cake Nouveau, to spend more time with her family. She’s earned it. Best of luck, Ms. Clark, and we look forward to your future culinary endeavors when the kids are grown! Continue reading

The Return of Ann Arbor’s Blimpy Burger!

The residents of Ann Arbor, MI were shocked to learn of the impending demise of their beloved, 60-year-old Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger last year. The land beneath the burger joint was sold to the local university for the construction of a dormitory.  The restaurant’s owners vowed to find a new spot to reopen the Ann Arbor institution, and they were as good as their word, as a new Blimpy Burger had its grand opening yesterday. Lines are long. Prices are up. Seating is more expansive. Fans are overjoyed! Continue reading

Is Montreal’s Schwartz’s North America’s Best Deli?

Where will you find the best deli in North America? Yes, it’s a ridiculous question but play along. Shalom Life produced a top ten list, and it goes without saying that we’re talking Jewish delis here. All those great Italian and German delis are out of the running for this particular project. Anyway, New York’s Katz’s and Carnegie made the list, and LA’s Canter’s and Langer’s did too. As did Michigan’s Zingerman’s (and while the name sounds Jewish, are they really a Jewish deli?). But Shalom Life deemed none of those delis greatest on the continent. That honor went to Schwartz’s Deli of Montreal. And they don’t even serve corned beef or pastrami! But they do serve smoked meat, which many say is superior to those other two deli meats. And we won’t argue with them. What deli do you think deserves to be called best in North America?
