A Morning Menu of Stories We Think You’ll Find Interesting

Everything, Available Everywhere

When Shake Shack comes to Chicago and Billy Goat goes to Washington, and the Big Apple gets a Garrett’s, and Marshall Field’s is now Macy’s… does it all become less special? Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Tribune takes the opportunity, with the arrival of Shake Shack in the Windy City, to look at the effect of all this regional homogenization. Continue reading

A Thorough Guide to NOLA’s Fried Chicken

Sara Roahen has compiled, for New Orleans Magazine, the most comprehensive comparative analysis of fried chicken in New Orleans that we’ve ever seen. We’ve grazed around the Crescent City many, many times, and even enjoyed some spectacularly good fried chicken. Yet somehow we never quite accepted the city as a fried yardbird mecca. Ms. Roahen said it best: ” [W]hen offered a choice in this town surrounded by water, I’ve historically chosen catfish or shrimp or oysters when in the mood for something fried. I now know that fried chicken isn’t only a safe bet, especially in our most community-oriented neighborhood restaurants, but often the best choice of all.” Continue reading

D.C. Best of 2014 Is Out

Express Best of 2014 is out, with a lot of interesting food categories. We definitely want to get to TaKorean, a Korean taco truck which won in the Best Food Truck category. Arepa Zone, also a truck, led the Best South/Central American category. Don’t know arepas? The story describes them as “Venezuelan fried corn pockets, stuffed with meats and cheeses in combinations like shredded beef, queso fresco, plantains and black beans.” Continue reading

World Chili Eating Championship in DC Saturday

Some of us like to eat. Some like to watch others eat. For those who fall into the latter category, this Saturday will offer major thrills, as Ben’s Chili Bowl‘s 4th Annual World Chili Eating Championship will take place at the Taste of DC festival. Last year’s chili champ Bob Shoudt (two gallons in six minutes!) will attempt to defend his title against the famous Joey Chestnut and others. The competition takes place at 3PM at 11th and Pennsylvania. Continue reading

A Look at D.C.’s Florida Avenue Grill at 70

Washington D.C.’s Florida Avenue Grill turned 70 years old yesterday. To mark the event, Sarah Kaplan looks back at the Grill’s 70 years for The Washington Post. Very interesting story. For instance, the current owner, Imar Hutchins, who purchased the restaurant nine years ago, is a vegetarian. He’s recently been sprinkling in a few more healthful menu options, while at the same time preserving all the old soul food favorites. He also “increased tipped workers’ pay to a dollar above the District’s minimum wage and begin granting paid vacation and sick days.” Read the whole story here. Continue reading
