Winter Impeding Fish from Coleman’s Fryers in WV

Lent began Wednesday and, for many seafood restaurants, this is the busiest time of year. At Coleman’s Fish Market of Wheeling, West Virginia, the extreme winter weather in Boston is making it difficult to obtain their usual continuous supply of fresh fish. Moody’s Diner is a classic old Maine diner from 1927.

Governor Paul LePage of Maine has tried to have a hand in the ongoing religious discrimination case against Moody’s Diner of Waldoboro. The Maine Human Rights Commission, three of whom were appointed by LePage, voted unanimously that Moody’s had discriminated against an employee on the basis of religion. In the 1930s, you could select from about 3,000 Jewish delis in New York City. Today, there are fewer than 200 in all of North America. Filmmaker Erik Greenberg Anjou takes a look at the disappearing, but still much-loved, institution of the Jewish Deli in his soon-to-open documentary Deli Man, his third film on the subject of Jewish culture. Fyvush Finkel, Larry King, Jerry Stiller, and Freddie Roman make appearances in the film, as, of course, do many of the country’s leading deli men. Read more about the film here.

Today you can find pits turning out first-rate smoked meat all over the country. Check out this story, which looks at the local barbecue scene, in The Hour of Norwalk, CT. Among the Q joints writer Frank Whitman takes a closer look at are Bobby Q’s of Westport and Wilson’s of Fairfield.
