Seinfeld and Harvey and Manny’s

One of our current favorite shows showed up at one of our favorite Chicago delis Monday, as Jerry Seinfeld shot an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee at Manny’s with guest Steve Harvey. They dined on corned beef, pastrami, and potato pancakes, and arrived in a ’57 Bel Air (interesting cars are a key feature of the web series). No word yet on when the episode will show up on Crackle and online.

100 Counties, 100 Restaurants in NC

Sometimes the choice is a traditional old-timer, like Price’s Chicken Coop in Charlotte or Parker’s Barbecue in Wilson. Other times, local tradition isn’t part of the equation at all, like when the pick is Youssef 242 in Hickory or Taste of West Africa in Fayetteville. What were talking about is the new feature from the Charleston Food Bloggers, where they have chosen the best restaurant in each of North Carolina’s 100 counties.  Have a look!

Mule Day, Columbia TN, April 6th through April 12th 2015

In the mid 1800s, Columbia Tennessee was known as a major mule trading center, a place farmers knew they could find quality animals to plow their fields. It wasn’t until 1934 that the reputation evolved into a formal Mule Day, which was held off and on since then, although today’s version began in earnest in 1974. Mule Day has been called “Rural America at its Best.” So just what is a mule, you ask? Good question! If daddy is a donkey and mommy is a horse, you’ve got yourself a mule. They are usually, but not always, born sterile, and tend to combine the best traits of both species. Continue reading

Teibel’s, Schererville IN

REVIEW

Sometimes LAF meals can be found in obscure shacks unknown to anyone beyond a five-mile radius. But not always. Take, for example, Teibel’s (pronounced Tee’-bls). Teibel’s is a local institution, well-known in the area as the place to celebrate those passages in life that often call for a banquet hall. While not particularly dressy, people arrive looking quite neat and presentable. These are the upstanding citizens of Schererville and beyond. Continue reading

Stanley’s Tavern, Chicago IL

REVIEW

Things are a little quiet here at Stanley’s after the lunch rush, so bartender Guy comes over to chat and do a little standup for the four of us. After every politically incorrect joke, each one filthier than the last, he slaps Sue’s brother Dave’s back and exclaims, “What! Ya killin’ me!” We like Guy. After he leaves to tend to other matters, owner Wanda, well into her 80s, sidles over, rolls her eyes, and sighs, “He’s a pain that no pill can cure.” Continue reading

Glider Diner, Scranton PA

REVIEW

Never underestimate the power of good brown gravy. Blanketing a hot roast beef sandwich, served as a dip alongside crisp, salty fries, and of course pooled in the crater of a volcano of mashed potatoes, brown gravy can make or break a diner meal. Continue reading

Governor’s Frog Jump and Egg Strike, Springfield SC, April 2nd through April 4th 2015

Jumping frogs, cracking eggs, and cow drops – oh, how we wish we could be in Springfield, South Carolina for this year’s 49th annual Governor’s Frog Jump and Egg Strike. The festivities actually began last Saturday, with the traditional beauty pageant. They continue tomorrow night, Thursday, April 2nd, at Frog Jump Arena, where the glorious Cow Drop is held. What’s a Cow Drop, you ask? Don’t worry, no cows will be harmed during this festival! You see, it’s the cows that will be doing the dropping, and if they drop their, er, business on your number, you win! Continue reading

Prep & Pastry of Tucson has been as hot as they come since opening a year-and-a-half ago. Pioneer Valley in MA Gets Very Late Maple Sugaring Start

There’s a rule to maple sugaring: the sap flows when daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nighttime temperatures drop below freezing. When nighttime temps stay above 32°, sugaring season is over. This time of year in the Pioneer Valley, a section of Massachusetts along the Connecticut River centered on Springfield, they are usually reaching the end of sugaring season, but consistent cold weather has meant that the local sugar bushes have only just now started to deliver their sap.
