Is Jewish Deli a Victim of Assimilation?

Those of us who love Jewish deli have spent many thousands of words pondering its decline. What are the reasons? Health-consciousness? Jewish assimilation into the American cultural mainstream? Changing tastes spurred on by more recent immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America? Read what Peter Beinart has to say about the subject in his story in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Lynn’s Paradise Cafe Neighbors Angry

The closing of Lynn’s two years ago has impacted the neighborhood.

The neighborhood has had enough. Lynn’s Paradise Cafe of Louisville, KY was a major draw to the neighborhood until owner Lynn Winter suddenly closed the restaurant without warning about two years ago. Since then, a number of businesses in the vicinity have been forced to close. Residents of the area have taken to protesting outside the former Lynn’s, carrying signs directed at Lynn Winter. They want her to either reopen or sell. Doing neither, they say, is putting a “chokehold on the neighborhood.” So far, Ms. Winter has not responded.

The New York Times sent Pete Wells to New Orleans to check out the recently reopened Brennan’s. The restaurant is attempting to preserve the old while simultaneously embracing the new. Their new chef, Slade Rushing, is offering a chef’s tasting menu, where he gets to show off his chefly chops, and Mr. Wells found the results impressive. He’s somewhat bemused by the massive sugar- and fat-laden breakfasts. And while he finds the signature Bananas Foster to be “very ordinary” he’s impressed by the modern take on bread pudding. Read the story here.
