A Morning Menu of Stories We Think You’ll Find Interesting
Maybe Billy Butler Shoulda Had the Brisket
Professional baseball players, on the whole, are a pretty superstitious bunch. If they called their mother and didn’t shave the morning of a win, you can bet Mom will be receiving wake-up calls and that beard will continue to grow as long as the team keeps winning. KC Royals DH Billy Butler had lunch at Joe’s Kansas City Tuesday and the Royals that night proceeded to win game six of the World Series 10-0. Butler had a double and an RBI. So there he was at Joe’s Kansas City again Wednesday, dining on ribs, beans, and Mountain Dew. Unfortunately for Butler and Kansas City fans, Butler singled in four at bats and the Royals lost the final World Series game to the Giants, 3-2.
A Look at Rochester, NY’s Swan Market
We’ve long been huge fans of the German meat market and lunch spot known as Swan Market, in Rochester NY. They make their own sausages and sides, and they have four taps of German and local brews. But this is really cozy grocery store dining, not a dark pub or mammoth German eating hall. Ed Patrick has written an in-depth piece for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle about this lunch spot that has rapidly become a local favorite. Check it out.
Surprize Squad Visits Glenwood Drive-In of Hamden, CT
We highly recommend the Glenwood for their crusty dogs with hot sauce and terrific onion rings.
Austin, TX Gets More Great BBQ
Austin, TX has long been near great Texas barbecue but the Q pickings in the city were slim. That’s been changing lately, as top-quality barbecue has sprung up within the city limits, and branches of the out-of-town legends have set up urban outposts. That parade continues as Black’s, of Lockhart, has just opened a branch at 3110 Guadalupe Street. They are now open and will be holding their grand opening November 8th. The barbecue will be brought in daily from Lockhart.
A Kosher Gino’s East for Chicago
Gino’s East Vegetarian is in the works for a fall 2015 opening in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. It’ll be the first kosher Gino’s East (of course, no meat toppings with the cheesy pies).
