Mike’s Deli, Bronx NY

REVIEW

Mike’s Deli is the Italian grocery of our dreams! And it’s barely a grocery at that; mostly, it’s a deli counter, packed literally to the rafters with hanging prosciutti, curing dry sausages, cheeses, oils, imported dried pastas, breads and rolls, jars of pickled vegetables… the sights, sounds, and smells cause sensory overload.  HAPPY NATIONAL ICE CREAM SANDWICH DAY!

Top 10: NC BBQ

It seems to us that there’s more passion and disagreement over the subject of which barbecue joints reign supreme in the Carolinas than in any other barbecue-rich region of the country. Most everyone agrees on the identity of the major players in, say, Texas Hill Country and Memphis, but opinions range widely in the Tar Heel State. Which makes every media look at North Carolina Q more than a review of the usual suspects. Check out this story covering ten choice BBQ spots in North Carolina and see if you agree.

HAPPY NATIONAL RASPBERRY CREAM PIE DAY!

Old-Fashioned Corn Roast Festival, Union Mills MD, August 1st 2015

For the 45th consecutive summer, the Union Mills Homestead will be hosting their annual Old-Fashioned Corn Roast Festival. The date is Saturday, August 1st, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Local corn roasted in the husk over coals is really something special, and your meal ticket gets you all the corn you care to eat! Along with that corn: fried chicken, applesauce, sliced tomatoes, roll and butter, and iced tea or lemonade. Continue reading

Noccioloni su' Fagioli: bean soup with pasta. Bean soups with pasta or farro (a type of wheat) frequently appear on Tuscan menus. The beans in this soup have been pureed to a smooth texture.

New Jersey Isn’t Boring! And Neither Is Daphne’s Diner

Gotta agree with the name of the blog: New Jersey Isn’t Boring! (exclamation point theirs). They paid a visit to our local favorite Daphne’s Diner in Robbinsville and proclaimed it “a great diner experience with excellent food.” We always take houseguests to Daphne’s for breakfast (Cap’n Crunch French toast, anyone?). It seems dinner can, as well, be recommended. Have a look.

HAPPY NATIONAL TEQUILA DAY!

Gilroy Garlic Festival, Gilroy CA, July 24th through 26th 2015

Yep, this is the one — the festival with the infamous garlic ice cream. They give the stuff away for free, no less, apparently confident in its limited novelty appeal. In the same way that Hershey, PA takes on the aroma of its famous roasted bean, Gilroy, CA will fill the air with the heady scent of the stinking rose this weekend, July 24th through 26th, as the town hosts the 37th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival. HAPPY NATIONAL VANILLA ICE CREAM DAY!

Mike’s Homemade Candies, Cheektowaga NY

REVIEW

Where did the Charlie Chaplin log come from? You can find it in just about every chocolate store in Buffalo, yet nobody we spoke with has a clue about where or how it originated. Sold as a candy log about the shape of a loaf of biscotti before it’s been sliced, Charlie Chaplins wrap chocolate, coconut, and cashews around a soft marshmallow filling (like Rocky Road spiked with coconut).
