Local Paper Makes Holiday Visit to La Posta de Mesilla in NM

Wiles-Smith’s Future in Memphis

Wiles-Smith drugstore and soda fountain opened in Memphis in 1944, and ever since, Memphians have had a soft spot for the old place. Owner Charlie Smith had announced earlier this year that he’d be closing the place towards the end of the year but, while the pharmacy is closed, the drugstore soda fountain remains open. Mr. Smith says he’s negotiating with an as-yet-unnamed potential partner to keep the place open, refurbish it, and expand the menu. If those plans don’t materialize, Mr. Smith estimates the soda fountain will close towards December’s end.

That’s the challenge the New York Times faced, and their 36 Hours in Santa Fe sounds like a good plan (for the first 36 hours of a week’s visit). Check it out.
