The James Beard Foundation has released its list of semifinalists for their annual awards, and Charleston, SC has an amazing 11 restaurants and chefs on the list. Among them are Lauren Mitterer of WildFlour Pastry, who is named in the category of Outstanding Baker. Hominy Grill is a semifinalist in the category of Outstanding Restaurant. Jason Stanhope of FIG is named for the Outstanding Chef – Southeast category and FIG is also named for Outstanding Wine Program. The final nominations will be released March 24th.

Like those in many New England towns this winter, businesses in Fall River, Massachusetts are suffering the effects of the season’s massive snowfall and nonstop below-freezing temperatures. The snow has to be piled somewhere, and somewhere is often the few parking spots on the street. And nothing’s melting. If people can’t park nearby, and walk safely to their destinations, they’ll head elsewhere until conditions improve. That might take many weeks.
