Benji’s Deli Wins Milwaukee’s Best Sandwiches, Breakfast in Poll

Yes, it looks fairly obvious that 51-year-old Benji’s Deli partisans stuffed the ballot box. Just the same, we’ve been to Benji’s and, it’s true, they DO make a good sandwich, and darn good hoppel-poppel for breakfast. So regardless of whether you accept OnMilwaukee.com‘s findings in their Best of Dining 2014 poll, we agree that Benji’s is well worth a visit, in the morning or the afternoon. And we’d like to try the editors’ choice, too, for a sandwich: the hipster-sounding Love Handle, where their namesake sandwich combines pork belly with egg salad and kale. Continue reading

Kopp’s of Milwaukee Dethroned by Purple Door

The shocking news is out! OnMilwaukee has been posting their annual Best of Dining awards, which apparently are voted on by readers. For ages, when we thought of ice cream and Milwaukee, we thought of Kopp’s and their thick custard. Doesn’t everyone? Apparently not because, while Kopp’s won OnMilwaukee’s award last year for the category Milwaukee’s Best Desserts, they finished second this year to Purple Door. What makes this more remarkable is that Purple Door makes ice cream, and Milwaukee is a custard town. The only constant is change. Continue reading

Gifford’s Wins Best Ice Cream at World Dairy Expo

For the fifth consecutive year, Gifford’s, a Maine-based ice cream company, has won the World Dairy Expo award for best chocolate ice cream. The Expo, sponsored by the Wisconsin Dairy Products Association, also gave Gifford’s top honors for their regular vanilla, French vanilla, and Philly vanilla. Gifford’s is based in Skowhegan and is found principally in the state of Maine, although it can be found less frequently as far south as Maryland and as far west as Illinois. We’re especially fond of the five Maine Gifford’s stands, where they offer flavors not found in containers. Congrats to Gifford’s! Continue reading

Take a Pizza Tour!

Pizza tourism is popping up all over! Check out this story by Caryn Rousseau of AP, in which she details pizza tours you can take in Chicago, New York, Boston, and Milwaukee (Milwaukee?!). Some are walking tours, most are by bus, and prices range from $39 in Boston up to $80 in Brooklyn, NY. We know people who’ve taken some of these tours and we’ve heard nothing but raves. It’s a good way to get an understanding of the local pizza styles.
