The shocking news is out! OnMilwaukee has been posting their annual Best of Dining awards, which apparently are voted on by readers. For ages, when we thought of ice cream and Milwaukee, we thought of Kopp’s and their thick custard. Doesn’t everyone? Apparently not because, while Kopp’s won OnMilwaukee’s award last year for the category Milwaukee’s Best Desserts, they finished second this year to Purple Door. What makes this more remarkable is that Purple Door makes ice cream, and Milwaukee is a custard town. The only constant is change.

Purple Door has a long roster of rotating flavors. Here are some of the more exotic and interesting ones: Fig and Black Tea, Garam Masala, Sweet Corn, Whiskey Bacon, and Balsamic Strawberry. They’ve even produced an ice cream ode to Wisconsin’s state drink, Brandy Old Fashioned.

Purple Door can be found in restaurants and groceries all over the Milwaukee region, and now they have a scoop shop, too. If you’re really nuts for regional ice cream you can order the stuff by mail but, as you might imagine, shipping sends per pint costs into the stratosphere.
