Evelyn Rotier, who started Rotier’s of Nashville, TN with her husband John in 1945, has passed away at the age of 94. Mrs. Rotier had retired from running the restaurant, which is now operated by her children, but she still stopped in for a cheeseburger on occasion. Rotier’s, a longtime favorite with students at the nearby Vanderbilt University, is famous for their cheeseburger served on French bread. The restaurant will be closed until Friday. A writer from New Zealand, on his first trip to New York City, stops in at Russ & Daughters on the Lower East Side and asks his counterman to put together a sampler of Russ’ finest. He leaves with pickled herring in sour cream and onions, sturgeon, sable, smoked salmon, bialys, babka, rugelach and a whole lot more. White Castle opened in Kansas in 1921. In 1922, Bob Kinkel, inspired by the Castle, opened Cozy Inn in Salina, KS. Unlike White Castle, the Cozy never went national. They still serve just the tiny one-ounce burgers cooked over onions, garnished with pickle, mustard, and ketchup… and no cheese!
