From Northern Michigan to You

Northern Michigan gets cold in winter. Very, very cold. So, while vacationers throng to the area to enjoy nature and water in summer, many of the businesses close down long before the winter holidays roll around. Lately, though, some of them have discovered that it pays to reopen in the weeks before Christmas to produce some of the Northern Michigan food favorites that summer visitors would like to give as holiday gifts. Crain’s Detroit Business runs down a few of the Northern Michigan food producers that will ship their regional delicacies to you, including American Spoon, Grand Traverse Pie Co. and Leelanau Cheese. Check it out!

Don’t Evict Grandma!

Menu, Cafe Edison, New York, NY

Don’t Evict Grandma! That’s what one of the signs carried by a Cafe Edison lunch mobber says. The lunch mobbers are being joined by theater people in efforts to convince the Hotel Edison in New York City to grant the Polish Jewish diner a stay of execution. Owner Conrad Strohl offers a slight hint of hope when he states that he’s in talks with the hotel to try to figure something out. We’ll see. In the meantime, listen to this NPR radio piece on the Edison.

You east and west coast folks may scoff but Indianapolis has an impressive array of locally produced charcuterie and cheeses, and great local breads and condiments with which to accompany them. Indianapolis Monthly presents a survey of some of the finest Indy has to offer, from Goose the Market‘s salmon pastrami and Tulip Tree Creamery‘s Trillium cheese to Gnaw Bone Sorghum Mill’s FROG jelly (a compote of figs, raspberries, oranges, and ginger) that the magazine says goes so well with cured meats. See the story here.
