The Story (and Expansion) of Red Truck Bakery
Brian Noyes, the man behind the much-lauded Red Truck Bakery of Warrenton, VA, is planning a second bakery for nearby Marshall. The location will also serve as a commissary kitchen and shipping center, as well as a café with an expanded menu and Counter Culture coffee. He hopes to open in early spring. Check out this wonderful, in-depth story in The Washington Post about Brian Noyes and the Red Truck Bakery.
17th Annual International Rutabaga Curling World Championship
The nights are longer; the days are colder; Christmas is almost here. And that can mean only one thing: Ithaca, NY’s annual Rutabaga Curling Championship is almost upon us. The event takes place at the Ithaca Farmers Market, on the last market day of the year. This year the big day is Saturday December 20th. Ithaca’s mayor will toss the ceremonial first rutabaga, to be followed by the majestic parade of rutabaga athletes. The games begin at high noon. Rutabaga curling can induce a hearty appetite. Some folks may be surprised to learn that rutabagas are edible, and rutabaga curly fries will be available for purchase. See The Ithaca Voice story for more info.
Photographic Guide to New Haven Pizza
Here’s a Gothamist photo guide to what they consider New Haven, CT’s finest pizza.Their list includes Pepe’s, Sally’s, and Modern, of course, but they also include BAR, Da Legna, and Tony & Lucille’s. We’ve been to BAR, and it’s good; the other two are new to us. Question is, can we tear ourselves away from Pepe’s white clam in order to try them!
Expanded Menu at Polonez Outside Milwaukee
Polonez, the go-to restaurant in the Milwaukee area for the best in Polish cuisine, has updated their menu to include what they are calling “new world dishes.” The new dishes come courtesy of the owners’ son but not to worry: these new menu items keep with the spirit of Polonez. There’s a meat board appetizer, for instance, that features fresh Polish sausage, liver pâté, a selection of smoked and fresh cold cuts, pickled vegetables, spicy mustard, and toast (for only $10!) The fish board, also $10, has croquettes of either cod and vegetables, or cod croquettes and vegetable croquettes (it’s not clear which), creamed herring, smoked fish, shallot caper salad, lemon, and toast. Read more about the expanded menu at the Journal Sentinel.
