Checking in at: Walter’s, Mamaroneck NY

As David Byrne once said, “Same as it ever was.” The beef/pork/veal franks are made for them, the house mustard is dotted with relish, and the dogs are split and then grilled in buttery oil on the flattop. The unique building is a National Historic Landmark. Since 1919. P.S.: Don’t ignore the top-notch shakes! Continue reading

Walter’s Hot Dogs, Mamaroneck NY

REVIEW

More than one hot-dog-loving food writer has proclaimed Walter’s Hot Dogs as the source of America’s finest hot dogs. While that assessment is certainly open to debate, less debatable is the assertion that Walter’s is America’s finest hot dog stand. For sure, there is none other even remotely similar to the early 1900s weathered-green copper-crowned pagoda building with lanterns at each corner. It’s a beauty, alright, and it’s been declared a national landmark to boot. Continue reading

Top 75 American Hot Dogs

Fortunes are made on ground beef patties, but squirt the meat into a casing and you’re talking about one of the true mom-and-pop-dominated small businesses in the country. People love hot dogs from sea to shining sea but their regional tastes vary too much for an entrepreneur to hit the jackpot with a national frank. One happy result — no two hot dog joints are exactly alike, making for endless possibilities for tube steak lovers. Continue reading

A Morning Menu of Stories We Think You’ll Find Interesting

Leave Thanksgiving Dinner to Puckett’s Grocery

If you live near one of the Puckett’s Grocery restaurants in Nashville, Columbia, and Franklin, in Tennessee, you may find the day just got easier and, depending on your cooking skills, the food may have just improved, too. All three Puckett’s will be serving a midday Thanksgiving buffet dinner for $25 per adult. They’re also offering takeout that, by our Northeast standards, looks more than reasonably priced: they’ll roast or (even better!) smoke an 18-20-pound turkey for $75 (deep-fried for $90). Smoked pulled pork will run about $10/pound. Great sounding sides are also available, including cornbread dressing and broccoli and rice casserole. Check out their Thanksgiving takeout menu and procedures here. Continue reading

95 Years of Walter’s Hot Dogs in Mamaroneck

Walter’s Hot Dogs will be celebrating their 95th anniversary from October 26th through the 28th. There’ll be anniversary specials, family fun, and games planned at the hot dog pagoda, along with a hot dog eating contest scheduled for Sunday the 26th at 3PM. Sign-up for the contest at Walter’s; space is limited. While you are there you can check out the renovations that took place during the first four months of the year. The external changes are subtle but the inside renovations are extensive, including a computer system. A computer system at Walter’s?!
