Croissant, Scraps, and Beignants (!) in Lafayette LA

The Times of Acadiana showcases three Lafayette, LA spots that do amazing things with croissant dough, and we don’t know where to begin! How about beignants, the awkwardly named Acadian variation of the Cronut, where large pinches of croissant dough are deep-fried like beignets, then dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon and drizzled with honey. Cajun Mkt. Donut Co. has a new name (they used to call themselves Meche’s Donut King) and a new look, but the donuts, stuffed breads, and Cajun kolaches have not changed.  They make what has been called Acadiana’s best king cake, and they are also, of course, a donut shop. We’ve tried neither king cake (a Mardi Gras specialty) nor donuts at Cajun Market, yet we still highly recommend a breakfast visit for a few unique items we did try. Continue reading

Leave Thanksgiving Dinner to Puckett’s Grocery

If you live near one of the Puckett’s Grocery restaurants in Nashville, Columbia, and Franklin, in Tennessee, you may find the day just got easier and, depending on your cooking skills, the food may have just improved, too. All three Puckett’s will be serving a midday Thanksgiving buffet dinner for $25 per adult. They’re also offering takeout that, by our Northeast standards, looks more than reasonably priced: they’ll roast or (even better!) smoke an 18-20-pound turkey for $75 (deep-fried for $90). Smoked pulled pork will run about $10/pound. Great sounding sides are also available, including cornbread dressing and broccoli and rice casserole.
