Firefighters responded to an alarm Sunday evening at the always-open, since 1952, truck stop restaurant legend (for their immense iced cinnamon rolls) Johnson’s Corner of Loveland, Colorado. The kitchen fire was small and easily extinguished but, unfortunately, it also set off the restaurant’s chemical fire suppression system. They had to close the place down until it could be thoroughly cleaned, and inspected by the health department. Johnson’s Corner managed to reopen Monday at 12:30 p.m. While they were closed, employees were stationed in front of the restaurant turning customers away and giving out free cinnamon rolls!

The official name of this festival is the 49th Annual Original Terlingua International Frank X. Tolbert – Wick Fowler Championship Chili Cookoff, which is a mouthful and then some! All those words are necessary to distinguish it from another chili cookoff happening in Terlingua the very same weekend: the Terlingua International Chili Championship, spun off from this one in 1983. All this chili brewing began in Terlingua in 1967 when Mr. Fowler, Mr. Tolbert, and others staged the first chili cookoff. That first cookoff ended in a tie between Mr. Fowler and H. Allen Smith. Who doesn’t love grocery store dining? The Swan Market is a German meat market/grocery, located in a residential Rochester neighborhood, that offers a bargain lunch four days a week.
