Kelly’s Roast Beef of MA Stayed Open During Blizzard

“It’s an opportunity for us to be open for the people who have to be out, the plow drivers, emergency personnel, police, DCR workers.” Those are the words of the general manager, John Barry, of Kelly’s Roast Beef in Revere Beach, MA. Kelly’s stayed open through the blizzard that dumped about two feet of snow on Revere.  Employees chose to sleep in the restaurant rather than battle the storm between Kelly’s and home. Read about the local restaurants that chose to remain open in this story in The Daily Item of Lynn, MA.

Czech immigrants brought kolaches to Texas about 150 years ago. Today, in and around the town of West, TX, you can find bakeries, like the Czech Stop and the Village Bakery, specializing in this Eastern European pastry. Traditional fillings are poppy seed, sweet cheese, prune, and apricot, but today you’re liable to find them filled with just about anything you could imagine, including smoked Texas brisket! Now it appears that the kolache is poised to go national. Is this kolaches’ moment? Texas Senator John Cornyn’s office has released a quite thorough history of the kolache. It’s worth a read!

America’s Top 21 Diners

On a certain level, the concept of putting together a list of the best diners is oxymoronic. The idea of a diner, at least in diner country (like New Jersey), is not a foodie quest for the best this or finest that. When you want a hot turkey sandwich or a plate of pancakes, you simply pop into the nearest diner. It’s not meant to knock your socks off. It’ll simply scratch that itch. On the other hand, there is such a thing as a destination diner, and it is true that the food, setting, and/or history of certain diners make some of them extra-special. Thrillist has put together a list of 21 diners they believe rise above the crowd. Based on the ones we’ve been to we’d say it’s a pretty good list.
